More About Martin Turner

I specialise in how to maximise performance under pressure using psychological skills training. With colleagues I developed psychophysiological pressure testing protocols used by business and sport organisations to understand reactions to performance stress. I also developed “Smarter Thinking”, a strategy for helping people deal with adversity, based on Rational Emotive Behaviour Therapy, for which I am also qualified to practice. I was Lead Sport Psychologist with England Futsal for 8 years and consult with a variety of professional sport and business organisations. I have also worked in professional football (6 years) and cricket (3 years), and in business (e.g., blue chip), health (NHS), and military settings (RAF). I can work across one to one and group settings.

Here is my short academic bio:

Dr. Martin J. Turner is a Reader in Psychology at Manchester Metropolitan University. He is a BPS Chartered and HCPC Registered Sport and Exercise Psychologist, and an Associate Fellow of the BPS. He is most known for his work applying rational emotive behaviour theory (REBT) within achievement settings, and the effects of stress and adversity on human wellbeing and performance. In his work he also examines the psychophysiology of the human stress response, and its relationship to human functioning under pressure. He holds an Advanced Practicum Certificates in REBT from the Albert Ellis Institute, who also awarded him the Albert Ellis award for research in 2018. Martin has also received an Outstanding Achievement Award for Research from the U.K. Association for REBT. He is the current Chair of the BPS West Midlands Branch. Martin has published his research widely, in over 50 peer reviewed papers, and various book chapters, and books. He is a frequent keynote/invited speaker at academic conferences and industry events, delivering CPD workshops to fellow professionals and trainees, and delivering consultancy across private and public sectors.
