Yoga has been practised for over 5,000 years and the focus on the mind and body means that is an excellent way of developing holistic health. Depending on the style of yoga used there will be different combinations of physical physical postures, breathing techniques, and meditation or relaxation. Studies have shown that there are a number of benefits to yoga, for example, increasing strength, flexibility and balance.

There are many different styles of yoga and can vary in how vigorous they are. For example ashtanga yoga which was popular in the 1970s and applies six sequences of postures that rapidly link every movement to breath. You may also have heard of “hot yoga” which is bikram yoga. This takes place in rooms with temperatures of nearly 105 degrees and 40 percent humidity. It consists of 26 poses and a sequence of two breathing exercises. Restorative yoga is a relaxing method of yoga with four or five simple poses, using props like blankets and bolsters to sink into deep relaxation without exerting significant effort in holding the pose. There are many more forms of yoga and the choice of the specific style of yoga to pursue really depends on what your aims are.
