How Can a Podiatrist Help?

In sport settings, podiatrists help athletes by diagnosing and treating a wide range of problems affecting the feet, ankles and lower limbs. The following are examples of the types of conditions a podiatrist will commonly treat in athletes: ingrowing toenails, heel pain, big toe pain, heel spurs, plantar fasciitis (arch pain).

A podiatrist will typically undertake a biomechanical assessment of the athlete’s movement (e.g., how an athlete walks and runs). Following this assessment and discussion with the athlete, the podiatrist will propose a suitable treatment. The type of treatment proposed by a podiatrist can include a strapping, ice, exercises, advice on appropriate footwear, insoles or orthotics. All podiatrist are registered with the Health and Care Professions Council. To train to be a podiatrist you must complete a recognized honours degree in podiatry.
