Ankle Sprain

An ankle sprain is the most common injury for people who play badminton. It occurs when you twist, roll, or turn your ankle abruptly or awkwardly. As a result, the sudden awkward movement tears your ligaments. 

The most common symptoms of a sprained ankle are pain, tenderness, bruising, swelling, and limited range of motion. There are several ways to treat an ankle sprain. For instance, rest for a few days and avoid activities that cause discomfort, swelling, and pain. 

Besides, apply ice to your ankle for about 15 to 20 minutes. You can use an elastic bandage to compress your ankle to stop swelling. Make sure you keep your ankle elevated to reduce the accumulation of fluid in the joint. Consult your health provider if the symptoms persist. 


Jumper's Knee

Patellar tendonitis, also known as jumper's knee, is another common sports injury in badminton. Jumper's knee occurs when a badminton player overuses their knee joint. The force of hitting the ground while playing badminton strains your tendon, causing inflammation of your patellar tendon. 

Remember, this tendon connects your patella or kneecap to your tibia. Not only does the jumper's knee weaken your tendon, but it can also cause tears in the structure if you fail to treat the condition on time. 

Common symptoms of the jumper's knee are pain and tenderness around the patellar tendon, inflammation, and pain when walking, running, or jumping. Taking a break from badminton for a few days or weeks to rest your patellar tendon can help relieve the injury by itself. 

Besides, you can use ice therapy, wear knee support, and undergo massage therapy. If the pain persists for a few days, make sure you take over-the-counter (OTC) medications, such as ibuprofen, to relieve inflammation and pain. Talk to your doctor if the pain persists for more than a week. 


Plantar Fasciitis

Although plantar fasciitis is a common condition for people between 40 and 60 due to osteoporosis and other musculoskeletal disorders, sports, such as badminton, can also cause this condition. 

Not playing badminton the right way can stress your heel, leading to the onset of plantar fasciitis. Common symptoms of plantar fasciitis are a pain in your heel, increased inflammation or swelling, and a tight Achilles tendon. 

Plantar fasciitis usually heals by itself and does not require advanced treatment. However, if you want to speed up the recovery process and relieve inflammation/pain, make sure you massage your feet, apply ice therapy, use dry cupping, TENs therapy, and medication. 


Achilles Tendon Rupture

The Achilles tendon connects your calf muscles to your heel bone. Overstretching this area of your body while playing badminton can increase the risk of tear or rupture. So, this injury affects the back of your lower leg. 

For instance, when you make a sudden forward movement while playing badminton, you can rupture your Achilles tendon. The condition is characterized by severe inflammation and pain, preventing you from walking and performing other activities. 

Although a partially torn tendon can heal by itself, it is crucial to rest your Achilles tendon using crutches. Apply ice packs to the injured area to reduce inflammation and pain. The cold compress constricts blood vessels to reduce circulation to the injured area. 

In addition, you can take OTC medications to relieve discomfort, inflammation, and pain. Always talk to your doctor if the pain does not go away with OTC medications and other conservative treatments. 


Patellofemoral Pain Syndrome

Patellofemoral pain syndrome, a condition characterized by pain in your knee's front, is another common sports injury in badminton. Patellofemoral pain syndrome, also known as runner's knee, is common in sportspeople. 

For instance, running and jumping while playing intense badminton games can cause aching pain in front of your knee. The pain aggravates when you walk, kneel, squat, and perform other physical activities. Rest your knee to speed up the recovery process. 

Undergo physical therapy sessions to perform rehabilitation exercises to relieve pain quickly. Besides, you can use supportive braces and apply ice packs to the injured area to restrict blood flow. 


Shin Splints

Shin splints are an overuse sports injury and common among badminton players of all skill levels. The damage occurs when you overuse your lower leg while playing badminton. As a result, the overuse or repeated movement irritate your bones and muscles in the lower leg and cause severe pain. Remember, shin splints can also lead to stress fractures. 

Other common symptoms are tenderness, soreness, pain in the shinbone, and inflammation in your lower leg. However, you can rest your body for a few days or weeks, depending on the injury's severity, to heal the area. 

Apply ice to your shinbone for 20 to 30 minutes to relieve inflammation and pain. Health professionals recommend using orthotics or insoles for your shoes to support your leg. Take OTC pain relievers and muscle relaxants to mitigate the pain.
